Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
What Size Memory Card Should I buy, and how many photos will fit on my card?
Memory card prices are regularly coming down in price, but if you'd like some extra help in deciding what size to buy, and would like to know how many photos you'll fit on your card, then have a look at this article
I can't get the photos off my camera, I've lost my driver CD, I've had to re-install Windows, I've lost my camera's cable, how can I get my photos on my computer now?
One of the simplest and easiest ways of dealing with this problem is to buy a USB multi-card memory card reader, simply make sure it supports your type of memory card, plug it into a USB socket, and away you go. Depending on which version of Windows you have, you may not need to load any drivers. Plus you can move it from PC to PC, and use it with future cameras you have.
Can you help me decide which camera I should buy? Which one is better, camera A, or camera B?
Because everybody's needs are different, some people may be more interested in one feature over another, I can't always tell you which camera you should buy. Especially if I haven't reviewed the camera myself. In order to help you choose, I've written this guide on "How to choose a good digital camera - Try before you Buy"
I can't use my SD Memory card, the camera says "Card Locked", "This memory card is protected", or "Memory card is protected" - what can I do to unlock the card?
SD (Secure Digital) Memory cards have a small lock on the side (yellow on this card pictured here), if this is pushed into the lock position (as shown), it will let you read and view the images and data on the card but it won't let you record new pictures / videos or data onto the card. It will also stop you from formatting the card. To fix this, simply take the memory card out of the camera and slide the lock to the unlocked position, if you lay the card down, as shown above, the unlocked position should always be up, on some cards it may not be as clearly visible as on this card. Some Sony Memory Sticks also have a small lock on them.
I have accidentally erased all my pictures off my memory card. Is there anybody who would know if that can be reversed? How can I get the images back?
If you've ever accidentally deleted some important photos, then this can help: Free Undelete is a completely free utility to recover deleted files and photos from your PC's hard drive or from a memory card connected to your computer. If you have a Sony memory stick, then you can use Sony's free image recovery software, alternatively try ZA Recovery.

Dear sir,
Since a few days a digital camera brand Megxon appeared on the Ebay auction marked !! This camera promises a lot. Ii's a 4 mgpixel interpolated up to 8 mgpixels. A 8x optical and 4 x digital zoom etc...The price on these auctions vary from 226 till about 300 EUR. The first impression looks great but have you got any idea about the real qualities of this camera??
Thanks for any possible answer.

I have few things to say on your Pentax Optio S30 review. Though this camera takes wonderful pictures in bright light, it can't excel in indoor photos. When photos are enlarged to actual size (using auto mode), grains do appear in images! (when I take photos in HP735, I never get grains!) What is your opinion about it?
Thanks

Hi, you could try setting the ISO level to 50 or 100 for indoor photos - if left on auto the Pentax may be increasing the ISO level to 200 or 400 generating more noise. Looking at my noise tests of both cameras - it appears that the S30 does produce pictures with more noise at the higher ISO settings - but it also appears as though the S30 retains more detail in the pictures. Hope this helps.

I just bought a megxon c480 on ebay, and am having a terrible time learning all of its features because the owners manual is next to impoosble to understand! The writer clearly does not speak English as a first language; the grammer, punctuation, etc. are atrocious. I have found this problem to exist with almost everything mfg. in Asia. Usually it isnt such a problem, because the product ain't rocket science. In this case, the product is very technical and it is a problem. If they want to sell products in the West, they should hire someone from the west to translate the manuals so they can be understood. I also am having trouble getting to the megxon home page.

Thank you v.much for all the info on the Pentax optio33lf - extremely useful, almost better than the manual!
I'm now hoping to buy a printer, I know this probably isn't your area but how would i find out if it's compatible with a SONY DPP-EX50 Digital Photo Printer? Would be grateful for any info.

Hi - I couldn't find any information about the Optio 33LF being 'Pictbridge' compatible, so I'm afraid I can't answer your question - all I can suggest is that you give it a try in a friendly shop that sells the Sony printer you're after.

I have found that my Optio S30 (a great buy) sometimes struggles to take accurately coloured white and yellow images in Super Macro mode. I almost always use the over-ride features on the camera to reduce noise but am I compromising the colour doing this? I take many flower and plant shots in super macro which I use for illustration purposes and don't want to spend ages manipulating them afterwards. I have much more success with green and blue images but yellow or white flowers show up a lot of unwanted grey contrast. Is there anything I can do to improve this - I'm pretty sure there's no fault with the camera.

Hello Joshua,
I'm desesperately looking for a review of the new Pentax Optio 50, or at least some sample photos.
I'm really wondering what picture quality such a 200 EUR digicam can achieve
Have you seen some ?
P.S.: great website!

Re: Optical zoom - yes a real optical zoom will help you get pictures of things further away. Digital zoom should be ignored, it's mainly used as marketing.
re: Pentax Optio S30 - perhaps custom white balance pointed towards a white object or grey piece of card would help set the correct white balance.
re: Pentax Optio 50 - I do hope to review this in the future but I'm not sure when. Why not try it out in a local store to see what you think of it.

Hi
I am a beginner to digital cameras and have one simple question. Does the quality of picture deteriorate once it has been transferred off the SD memory card onto CD or HD? I have 200+ holiday pictures on my memory card and I although I have transferred to CD I am reluctant to format the memory card if the prints will be better reproduced direct from the memory card. Any thoughts would be warmly received.
Thanks

Hi, in response to the above question, the quality of your photo won't change on the HD, the software your camera has will have already done that. The data is now set.

Hi,
I have had my Canon Powershot S410 Camera for a little over a year and I have never had a problem with it. Yesterday, I took some pictures at a party, and then turned off my camera, and later when I tried to take some more pictures, I received a "memory card error" message. When trying to view my pictures, the screen simply showed the E51 error message on a black screen and then automatically shut down my camera. I am not able to take any pictures or view any old pictures. I tried using my brother's memory card with my camera, and I could view and take pictures, so it's not my camera that is messed up. Do you know how to fix the memory card or at least recover the pictures on the memory card? I really appreciate any help or advice that you have. Thank you so much.

This normally happens when installing drivers on Windows XP - it is normally okay to accept / install the driver, as long as you are sure you're installing the correct Windows XP driver - failing that you could always contact the seller of the camera to get further help from them.

If you have lost your files, you can try a memory card reader, and try to perform a 'scan disk' to check for errors - you can also try some software from: http://www.getdata.com/products.html - such as 'Recover My Photos'

Sir, I am thinking of buying a new digi-cam. I am from India and have a budget of somewhere around 12000 Rs. in which the best cams I am easily getting are Kodak CX-7330, Sony DSC-S40 and Canon Powershot A-400.
But I am really confused b/w the three. I looked at sample pictures at many places and thinking Kodak is not worth buying as it is the same rate as Sony DSC-S40. Can u plz give me a review of Sony DSC-S40.
And I have seen that the picture quality of close-ups and indoor photos of Canon is not good though it is excellent for outside photos. Zoom is better than Kodak. I don't know about Sony.
I intend to use the camera for college purpose. Shooting concerts in auditoriums, sports events, competitions, close-ups, parties and also on trips. So the camera should have a nice-picture quality and range that is available in this budget range. Also the zoom mode should be nice as I often use zoom.
So please can u guide me which of the three is better and can u also post the review of Sony DSC-S40 camera.
I shall be highly greatful. Please reply back at ankitbh2002@rediffmail.com

Hi Joshua,
I've been using my old Fuji finepix (cant remember the number but something like F400 zoom) for what seems like an eternity but I think its now time for me to update. One thing that I really like about the fuji though is that it works really well in low light. This is something that I treasure as I have often been able to get photos without a flash indoors. This is useful in places like chruchs and large buildings where the flash just gets dissipated anyway. My question is how can I find out about low light performance and which if any cameras would you recommend that are 5mp and at least 3x Optical zoom in a compact style.
Cheers
Steve

In answer to the last 2 questions - An excellent low-light camera is the Fujifilm FinePix F10 - it's compact, has a 3x optical zoom lens, a 2.5" screen, a very bright focus assist lamp helping it focus in low-light, and it has ISO up to 1600 which again helps it in low light. Have a look at the review on this site here for more information about it. If you are likely to take a lot of photos indoors, or in low-light then a focus assist lamp (or manual focus) will help you get photos that are in focus, anti-shake and image stabilisation can also help. Thanks Josh

I found a nice Minolta F200 on Ebay which works fine on NiMH at 2.5volt.
The matching AC-6 adapter is expensive at £33+, so I had hoped to use my own DC supply connected to the camera's 3volt connector. It does not fire up at 3v and it appears that the connector needs a higher DC voltage input, than is required by the camera using batteries. It shows more signs of life when I approach 4/5v but I am scared to go further without knowing the exact output voltage of the AC-6 adapter. The manual gives no clues. Do you know anyone who has an AC-6 and can measure the DC output accurately or a diagram of the input circuitry for the power connecter ?
I am an electronics geek as you will gather. Thanks ewmclean@tiscali.co.uk

Hi Pip,
If price is not an issue, then I would recommend you try them out in a shop and see which one feels best to you. The Canon takes SD memory cards which are cheaper than the Sony memory sticks that the H1 take. I guess it's a minor issue, but SD cards will work with Kodak, Nikon, Pentax, cameras etc, so in the future if you change cameras then at least you can take your memory card with you.
Let me know how you get on, and feel free to write a reader review when you get one. Cheers

Hi ! I bought a pentax optio S45 (in France), it seems alcaline batteries doesn't last long (at least during this first contact period).
The pentax adapter D-AC5 is too expensive for me. Does anyone has any idea on the voltage, current drain, kind of plug pin out needed by the optio S45 (or delivered by the D-AC5), this in order to use a generic adapter or a home made solution. The most important thing is to get at least the polarity. Thanks. José (from France)

I have a Pentax Optio S30. I've been quite happy with it except for the constant failing batteries.
Now all of a sudden it will not turn on again. The green light goes one when I press the ON button, but it will not switch off again nor will it turn on all the way. Only thing that goes on is the green light.
I've tried all kinds of batteries and was wondering if anyone has any practical tips of ideas to what could be wrong with it.

Hi,
Thankyou for your very informative reviews. I am currently trying to decide whether to purchase the Olympus mju digital 500 or the Olympus Stylus Verve S (5.0). I'm not overly concerned with zoom, or manual over-rides. My main interest is getting the best image quality for happy snaps (indoors and out). Can you advise? Many thanks for any insights :)

Hi Anonymous - have you tried high power rechargable batteries with the camera?
Hi Mel - I think the Mju 500 should produce slightly better quality images than the Mju S - however I haven't tested the Mju S personally so can't confirm for definite. But because the Mju 500 has a slightly bigger lens, and more zoom, it should produce slightly better results. If image quality is a priority I would go for the Mju 500, if size is a priority I would go for the Mju S. I know quite a lot of people who are very happy with the Mju 500. Thanks for asking, and I hope this helps, Josh.

Hi Anon, the card should have a little switch on the side of the camera, you have probably moved the switch "locking" the card, simply move it the other way and it will unlock it and you can use the card again. The switch is there to protect the pictures against accidental deletion. Thanks for asking, Josh

Is not having a proper viewfinder a problem? I ask because many cameras around the £100/200 mark appear to only have the screen on the back of the camera. Is it difficult to avoid shake when using a zoom camera at arms length? And what about seeing the screen in bright sunlight?

I've got a 3 year old Canon Digital Ixus. I'm looking to get a new digital camera - I've been fairly happy with the Ixus, but one of the real annoyances is the time delay between pressing the button and it taking a picture. Obviously this is worse when the flash needs to warm up, but even when not using the flash, it is not instantaneous like old-fashioned cameras used to be! Do manufacturers quote anything like "response time"? I haven't seen anything in my looking so far that enables me to compare this criteria between different models.

Hi Anonymous Canon Digital IXUS owner - I would recommend the Fuji FinePix F10 or F11 - it's a very fast camera with good battery life, it also has a "high speed" mode which makes the camera even quicker (although at the expense of battery life, 300 shots as opposed to 500 shots on normal mode). All future reviews on this site (and some of the most recent ones) will feature specific timings in the camera speed section. Thanks for the comment!

Hi Anonymous - you should be able to set this in the setup menu - by pressing the mode button, you should get to a blue setup menu and one of the options will be for the flash setting, which on this camera is set to off by default. Hope this helps, Thanks for asking, Josh.

Hi TY - I would recommend a card reader - I have previously tried to find drivers for the MX-200 myself, but been unsuccessful - a multi card reader will let you read the memory card and any future memory cards you may have and is a good investment as it makes it very easy to get photos off a camera without needing to load camera drivers.

It may be that the camera is part of a batch of faulty cameras with CCD faults: details here - so it could be worth contacting Fuji to see if they will repair free of charge. If not then it may be time to look for a new camera. Have a look at my reviews or top cameras for some ideas - you may like the Fuji F10/F11 if you want to stick with Fuji.

Just want to be able to point and shoot and not worry about settings. Tried the Canon A520 and found it way too slow. Suggestions? Unfortunately no reivew by you on the Conon SD300 and 400.
Have a look at my Canon IXUS 30 Review - it's a quick small camera very similar to the IXUS 40 and 50. Alternatively have a look at the very fast, and easy to use Fuji F10 / F11.

Hi Andy - both the Samasung Digimax A7 and Samsung Digimax V700 digital cameras appear very similar, so personally, I would choose the one available for the lowest price. The Samsung Digimax A7 is currently only £139 at Amazon.co.uk making it excellent value for money.

MY MEGXON C480 FREEZES FROM TIME TO TIME, I CANNOT EVEN TURN IT OFF, IT HEPLS ONLY IF I TAKE OUT THE BATTERIES, WHAT COULD THE PROBLEM BE? THANKS GUYS

Hi Jozsef
Thanks for your question. If it freezes when it is trying to view a picture in playback more or when taking a photo, then it could be a memory card problem - you could try formatting the memory card (after backing up all photos) or try a different memory card.
Alternatively if the batteries are not very high powered, then it's possible that the batteries aren't supplying enough power at a crucial moment (for example, to charge the flash) - you could try a set of new Duracell Alkaline batteries as a test.
Hope this helps. You can find the manual, and some FAQ for the Megxon C480 on Megxon's website here:
Megxon C480 FAQ / Manual.

thanks Joshua, it is true, it happened after I haven't used it for a while, so it can be the batteries. i'll format the card, to see if that was the problem. i hope it is not something more serious like the software, because I really like this camera. Thanks again!

I have had the Megxon C480 for over a year.
I HATE IT.
When taking pictures the viewfinder actually goes BLACK as the shutter closes. Since most of my shots are of horses and they are moving, I can tell you what a pain this is.
Also, the shutter delay is the SLOWEST of any camera I have used or been around, including cheap cameras.
I put in a larger memory card and this has not helped.
I have tried using the different ISOs
The owners manual is USELESS
It gives no instructions as to what setting or what mode one should take pictures in.
Contacting tech support is useless.
Please is there anyone that can give me a hint on how to speed up the shutter?
Also when you take video you can not zoom or move the lens. You have to stop taking the video re-set the lens and start again.
If you are looking at this camera STAY AWAY. I loved my old Olympus so much more.

I recently bought a lumicron 618 and my PC will not detect it to transfer pics.tried everthing!
Is buying a card reader a option? or any tips please
At 10:29 AM, April 08, 2006,
Joshua said…
Yes, if you use a memory card with your Lumicron camera and can take it out, then using a memeory card reader should work fine. With Windows 2000, Windows XP and Mac operating systems you shouldn't need to install any drivers. If another version of Windows then you will need to make sure that the memory card reader you buy has the right drivers for your version of Windows.

Hi, I recently purchased a panasonic lumix fx2 from ebay and I just received it today, but unfortunetly, the menu isn't in English,it's either chines or Japonies and there's no manual and the seller won't be available for another month, Is there any way that I can change the language?
Thanks for any input

Hi Natasha, on the Panasonic I have, to change the language, you can switch it on in photo mode, press set / menu, and there should be a setup menu option, symbolised by a spanner + screwdriver, or shown in yellow, language is the last option on that menu, push right and you should get the choice of English. Hope this helps, thanks Josh
PS - My Panasonic FZ3 review has pictures of the screens, including the setup screen, which may help you.

Hi Janet:
There should be an option in the menus to copy from the internal memory to the memory card and vice versa.
Re Megxon/Tekxon - you should be able to find more information on their website: http://www.megxon.com/
Hi Marissa: There should be a very small button underneath the memory card cover - this is normally pressed down when you close the memory card cover. You could experiment with pressing this down yourself and see if this makes it work. If the memory card cover has been damaged in anyway then this may stop it pressing the button when it is closed.

Olympia Tec-V10 Drivers can be found here. Hope this helps.
You can find out what RAW, SHQ, HQ, SQ1, SQ2 etc means in the Olympus SP-320 Review here.
For a digital camera that can withstand being dropped, submerged in water, and withstand dust, the best and pretty much only camera available is the Olympus Mju Stylus 720SW / 725SW. It's been reviewed here.
As far as I'm aware, it's not possible to use the Canon Powershot A520 as a webcam, sorry. I think the same applies for other Canon digital cameras.

"Card-cover open" disables my camera Olympus FE-130. I think a small plastic trigger piece broke off when I opened to put in batteries. I don't know what to do! Is there any way to override this reading? Only the Power button works. This camera is only a month old! I can't take it in because I'm working in Russia, but will be coming to London in 2 days. However, I will only be there for 10 days, probably not long enough to take it in anywhere. HELP! bofield8@ix.netcom.com

Hi,
Have a Casio QV-R40 and it currently has a 128K SD memory card.
Wanted to upgrade the card size and purchased a Viking 1 Gb SD card (which looks exactly the same as my existing card) but I cannot get it to accept the card. I have formated the card and inserted - No joy. I have copied the exiting cards contents to the new card on my PC - No joy.
Is there something I am missing or a place I can check for known incompatability issues between camera's and SD card manufacture's.....????
Other than that - Any one need a 1Gb SD card....????
Is there anywhere

G'day
I have a Samsung Digimax V50 which I am quite happy with - with one exception. Whenever I take a shot I need to anticipate to try and get a good photo as there is a delay from when I press the button to when the photo is taken.
Is there any way to make it instantaneous?
Thanks

Hi!
I'm searching for a digital camera quite a while. But unfortunatly I can't afford much money (250 euro maximum) and I want to use it for Partys (dim light, snapshots). Further I need a good zoom range for a holiday in a few weeks.
I have tested the Ricoh Caplio R4 but I'm not statisfied with the "dim light action".
Can you give me advice, please.
P.S this site is the most informative site I have found, since I want to find a good camera

Hi Lennart
I would recommend the Fujifilm FinePix F20 - it's around £104GBP and is the cheapest point and shoot camera that's capable of taking photos well in low light. It's only got a 3x optical zoom lens, but image quality is excellent, like the F30. Both the F20 and F30 are very quick in operation and also have a "High speed mode" to further speed up shooting. You could also have a look at the Fuji S5600 as this has a 10x optical zoom lens, ISO1600 and should also be good in low light. It's available for around £120GBP.
To the Samsung V50 owner - one way to speed up camera response is to half-press the shutter button, till the camera is focused. The second press will make the camera take the shot and it will respond much quicker. If this still isn't quick enough then have a look at the Fuji FinePix F20 or F30 as mentioned above. Hope this helps,
Josh
